As we move into an era of shorter and shorter content & attention span, it's becoming harder to appeal to users.

Design principle

With a short attention span the first idea would be to pack as much information as possible in a single view, but that would overwhelm many users, so we can't even have a gigantic wall of text.

So what?

Well, we need:

  • Show as much as possible
  • Use as little text as possible

With this in mind, I got to work in September 2026, I started by asking anyone I knew the following:

  • "What's the app you open most often?"
  • "What makes you use that app?"
  • "Which parts of the app you like the least?"

From this pool of people:

  • 10 office workers
  • 8 developers
  • 25 students

I got reviews of the whole "Office365" suite, VSCode, Atom (unfortunately gone), GitHub, Instagram, TikTok, and many more apps;
one thing became clear: the bigger the task, the harder the interface is to use.

So I got to work, and I discovered different techniques of packing data, down here I've divided it by end-target.

Critical infrastructure reporting

On any infrastructure we need to handle faults, warnings and incidents efficiently, and in 99% of cases you want something immediate that tells you either "it's all good" or "something's wrong"

The end goal therefore is something along the lines of having this starting view:

1 Fault detected

On main-prod-server-01

It's simple, straight to the point, it can be fitted anywhere in a dashboard and doesn't overwhelm the user, only when he actually needs to know what's going on the "Details" button helps him get there

This is especially useful when a non technical user accesses the platform, it's not telling him exactly what's wrong, but in his mind he'll think "I better call IT for this".

Similarly, when everything is going fine:

No issues

If a user sees a whole wall of text of what's wrong, it might confuse him, this is crucial especially in real-time systems, for example on a chargepoint management system (CPMS):

1 Fault detected

On hq-charger-14
